What Makes a Good Username?
A good username is easy to say, easy to spell and still free on the platforms you use. Two short words usually beat one long one: "QuietOtter" is easier to remember than a string of letters, and it reads the same whether someone hears it or sees it.
Keep personal details out of it. A username is public, so your full name, birth year or town can tell strangers more than you intend - Roblox, for example, asks players not to use real names, phone numbers or addresses. A keyword you like, a nickname or a random combination gives you an identity without the personal data.
Using the same username everywhere makes you easy to find, which is what you want for a brand and not always what you want for a private account. Decide which accounts should be linked, and pick separate names for the rest.
Username Rules by Platform
Choose a platform in the generator and every suggestion meets that platform's published rules; type a name you already have in mind into "Check a username" to see which rule it passes or breaks. The rules below come from each platform's own help centre. Where a platform does not publish a rule, we do not guess it.

Usernames for Instagram, TikTok, Roblox, Discord and More
Instagram and TikTok usernames
Both allow letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so styles such as "quiet.otter" or "quiet_otter" work; TikTok adds that a username cannot end with a period. Neither publishes a maximum length in its help centre, so the generator keeps suggestions short.
Roblox usernames
Roblox allows 3 to 20 letters and numbers, with at most one underscore that is not the first or last character. With Roblox selected, the generator never produces a second underscore.
Discord usernames
Discord usernames are 2 to 32 characters of lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods, without two periods in a row. The generator switches to lowercase styles automatically.
YouTube handles
A YouTube handle has 3 to 30 characters and may use underscores, hyphens and periods, but not at the start or end.
Gaming usernames: Twitch, Minecraft, Fortnite and gamertags
Twitch usernames are 4 to 25 characters; Minecraft Java names are up to 16 letters, numbers and underscores; Epic Games display names for Fortnite are 3 to 16 characters. Pick the "Gaming" word style for names like "ValiantDragon", or keep a gamertag short for consoles that show little space for it.
Reddit usernames
Reddit does not publish its username rules in its help centre, but it does say a username cannot be changed later - so choose with care.
Cute, Cool and Aesthetic Usernames
The "Words" setting picks the vocabulary. Cute combines soft words and small animals ("FluffyPanda", "SleepyMuffin"); cool leans on space and weather ("CosmicFalcon", "SilentStorm"); aesthetic uses colours and nature ("MistyWillow", "LunarLotus"); gaming uses heroic and mythical words ("ValiantDragon"). Every word in every list was chosen by hand - no brands, no real people, nothing offensive.
Username vs Password
A username tells a site who you are; the password proves it. The username is public, so it adds no security. Never reuse it inside your password, and never use the same password on two sites. Once you have a username, create the account with a random password or a passphrase, and keep both in a password manager.
Username Generator FAQs
How do I make a username with my name?
Type your name in the "Your name" field. Every suggestion then contains it, combined with a random word or a few digits - for example an adjective in front or an animal after it. Accents are simplified ("José" becomes "jose") because most platforms accept only plain letters.
Can I generate usernames from keywords?
Yes. Add a word you like - a hobby, a food, a game - in the "Keyword" field. You can combine it with your name; suggestions then contain both.
Is the username available?
This page cannot tell you: availability is known only to each platform, and checking it would mean sending your ideas to it. Try your favourite on the platform's sign-up or rename screen.
Are the platform rules up to date?
Each rule comes from the platform's own help centre, with the date it was checked shown in the table above. Where a platform does not publish a rule - for example a maximum length - the page says so instead of guessing. Platforms can change their rules at any time.
Are my name and keywords saved?
No. Suggestions are made in your browser. Your name and keywords are not sent anywhere, not stored, and not put in the page address.
Should my username be secret?
No - a username is public by design. What must stay secret is the password. Never build the password from the username, and give every account its own randomly generated password.
What is the difference between a username and a display name?
Many platforms have both. The username (or handle) is unique and identifies the account, often in its web address; the display name is the name shown on your profile and does not have to be unique. Discord, for example, publishes separate rules for each.
Why do some suggestions contain numbers?
Only when "Add numbers" is on. Numbers make a name more likely to be free on big platforms, at the cost of being a little harder to remember.
