Services change their rules. If Instagram's own sign-up or password form says something different, the form is right - and this page is out of date.

Requirement vs Advice on Instagram

Instagram's Help Center states one hard rule: a password must have at least six characters. Everything else is advice - at least eight characters is better, combine numbers, letters and special characters such as !$@%, avoid repetition, and do not use your email address, phone number or birthday. It also asks you to use a password for Instagram that differs from your email and bank passwords.

Six characters is far below NIST's 15-character baseline. The check above shows the requirement, the advice and the NIST comparison side by side, so you can see how much room there is between "accepted" and "hard to guess".

How to Create a Password Instagram Accepts

The quickest way is to let a generator do it. "Generate a password that meets these rules" opens the password generator with every character type switched on and 16 characters - within Instagram's limits and at or above NIST's 15-character baseline. The generator guarantees that each enabled character type appears, so the password meets type rules on the first try.

Then save it in a password manager rather than writing it down, use it for Instagram only, and switch on two-factor authentication if Instagram offers it - see what 2FA is.

Instagram Password FAQs

What are the Instagram password requirements?

Instagram requires at least 6 characters. It recommends at least 8 characters and a mix of lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. The source is Instagram Help Center: Why Instagram tells you your account is at risk, checked on 2026-10-06.

Does Instagram require special characters?

It is not published as a requirement, but Instagram recommends special characters.

Is there a maximum password length for Instagram?

Instagram does not publish a maximum. NIST asks services to accept at least 64 characters, so a long passphrase should normally fit.

Is a password that meets the Instagram rules strong enough?

Meeting the rules only means the form accepts it. NIST's current guidance asks for at least 15 characters when the password is the only factor; Instagram's minimum of 6 is below that. A generated password of 16 characters is far harder to guess than a word bent to fit the rules.

Is it safe to check my Instagram password on this page?

The check runs in your browser: the password is not sent, saved or put in the address, and the field is cleared when you leave. Even so, you never need to type a real password into any website other than the service itself - checking a new password before you set it is the safer habit.

How often should I change my Instagram password?

Change it when it may have been exposed - after a breach, a phishing attempt or a suspicious sign-in - not on a calendar. NIST says services shall not force periodic changes. A unique password and two-factor authentication matter more.

Why does Instagram say my password is not secure?

Instagram asks you to change a password it considers weak or possibly exposed - for example one you also used on a site that was breached. A new, unique password fixes that.

Can I use my phone number or birthday in my Instagram password?

Instagram advises against it: anything that is easy to find out about you is easy to guess. A random password avoids the problem entirely.
