Discord Password Requirements
Discord's password requirement and advice, from Discord's Safety Center, with a live check and a one-click password that meets them.
Type a password above to check it against these rules.
Also required, but not checkable here:
- - Additional requirements may apply depending on your region (Discord support)
- - Not a password you use anywhere else (recommended)

Services change their rules. If Discord's own sign-up or password form says something different, the form is right - and this page is out of date.
Requirement vs Advice on Discord
Discord's Safety Center states one hard rule: a password of at least 8 characters. The rest is advice - choose a long password, mix uppercase letters, lowercase letters and special characters, and do not use it for anything else. Discord also says it will never ask for your password - a message that does is not from Discord.
Discord's support pages add that further requirements may apply in some regions. They are not listed, so this page cannot check them; the check above covers the published minimum and the advice.
How to Create a Password Discord Accepts
The quickest way is to let a generator do it. "Generate a password that meets these rules" opens the password generator with every character type switched on and 16 characters - within Discord's limits and at or above NIST's 15-character baseline. The generator guarantees that each enabled character type appears, so the password meets type rules on the first try.
Then save it in a password manager rather than writing it down, use it for Discord only, and switch on two-factor authentication if Discord offers it - see what 2FA is.
Discord Password FAQs
What are the Discord password requirements?
Discord requires at least 8 characters. It recommends a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters and symbols. The source is Discord Safety Center: Four steps to a super safe account, checked on 2026-10-07.
Does Discord require special characters?
It is not published as a requirement, but Discord recommends special characters.
Is there a maximum password length for Discord?
Discord does not publish a maximum. NIST asks services to accept at least 64 characters, so a long passphrase should normally fit.
Is a password that meets the Discord rules strong enough?
Meeting the rules only means the form accepts it. NIST's current guidance asks for at least 15 characters when the password is the only factor; Discord's minimum of 8 is below that. A generated password of 16 characters is far harder to guess than a word bent to fit the rules.
Is it safe to check my Discord password on this page?
The check runs in your browser: the password is not sent, saved or put in the address, and the field is cleared when you leave. Even so, you never need to type a real password into any website other than the service itself - checking a new password before you set it is the safer habit.
How often should I change my Discord password?
Change it when it may have been exposed - after a breach, a phishing attempt or a suspicious sign-in - not on a calendar. NIST says services shall not force periodic changes. A unique password and two-factor authentication matter more.
Why does Discord reject a password that is 8 characters long?
Discord's support pages say that additional requirements may apply depending on your region. Those rules are not published in detail, so the form's message is the authority - a longer, random password usually satisfies it.
Should I turn on 2FA for Discord?
Yes. Discord calls two-factor authentication the most secure way to protect your account and supports authenticator apps. See what 2FA is - and the TOTP generator shows how those app codes work.
